Inside Specialized: the lab where tomorrow’s bikes are born
Morgan Hill, California. This is where Specialized designs and prototypes its frames before they reach the shops. En Roue Libre toured the prototyping lab and the test room, where rigs apply up to 1,500 kg to a frame.
How a frame gets approved
100,000 cycles, 140 kg on each pedal, 14 hours of non-stop testing. And destructive tests, where a frame is loaded until it breaks to find its exact limit.
From machining to carbon
A 5- and 7-axis CNC shop that machines its own moulds and runs unattended overnight. Twice-recycled aluminium, bought back from aerospace and resold as chips. A composite lab with its prepreg freezer, 200 to 500 plies per frame and a heated press at 175°C. A live demonstration of why fibre orientation changes everything. And the SWAT door prototype that led to today’s production version.
